There is one glaringly obvious trait that determined people share… nothing can make them quit.
I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who believe this is just one of those traits that you're either born with, or you're not. While it's certainly true that there are people who are born with more than their fair share of stubbornness, this is still a characteristic that you can instill in your child.
Most people, when they choose to quit something, make the decision out of frustration or anger. Every musician will go through anger and frustration, with themselves, their instruments, even teachers and band mates. Simply walking away and allowing the initial emotion to subside, and waiting to make a decision is very effective. It gives your child the time to refocus their perspective, and often renews their determination, making it that much stronger.
Visualizing goals before or after practice is another great tool. If you can see the road ahead of you it will feel a lot less like wandering aimlessly. It's important to know that your student will not always receive recognition for their achievements. While it's good to fill this void every now and then, it's also important that they learn how to push through these droughts early on, as they will happen many times throughout their journey.
