I’m not going to lie, there are people of all ages who pick up an instrument lightning fast and are incredibly good from day one.
That being said, those people are so few and far between that I'm not sure the odds can reasonably be counted…. and even they have struggles.
For the vast majority of people, learning an instrument takes time, hard work, dedication, and patience.
Without patience, so very many musicians wouldn't possess the perseverance needed to master their craft. Patience is required in conjunction with diligence to maneuver effectively through practice, and for that practice to turn into productive progress.
Patience helps us to navigate through the rough patches, in practice, in performance, and in creating. Anyone can get into a rut, but with patience you absolutely will get through it.
Have the courage to walk away from anything that is straining your patience, and the wisdom to come back to it after an hour or so. Sometimes all you need to get past that wall is a little time for you to calm your body’s reaction, and distance for a fresh set of eyes or ears.
Be patient with yourself, you will always be rewarded by it.
