Why You Need To Expand Your Musical Range

There are so very many musicians in the world, it would seem an infinite number. Yet there are a finite number of genres. It's pretty much a guarantee that in your favorite genre there are going to be more outstanding musicians than you could hope to ever count! And let's face it, it is exceedingly rare for a musician to stand out from the crowd.

So what does that matter, you might ask? Well, I'm glad that you did. Let me break it down for you…

The number one and two goals of any profession should be to master your craft and to have fun. You can be fulfilled with just one or the other but you really do need both for optimal satisfaction. Now, I understand when you say I'm happiest playing my favorite genre; however, without learning the others the only thing you become a master of is…. well, your genre. In order to truly master your craft, you have to start learning and mastering the other styles of playing. And who knows? You might find another genre that's incredibly fun to play!

Depending on your career goals, your next focus should probably be standing out and being noticed. But that producer you wanted to work with so badly went to a blues show while you were busy being “true to punk”. It's a simple fact, the more styles you play, the more gigs you can play, the more people will see you. Your skill level will express itself no matter what genre you are playing that night, trust me.

Learning multiple genres also adds to your professional toolkit, and if you really want to stand out as a god among mere mortal musicians, you really want that toolkit to be as diverse as possible.

What are your favorite genres to play and which ones are you currently trying to master?
