Being a Parent of a Musical Child - Part 4: Strong Work Ethic

A strong work ethic when it comes to learning is probably the easiest thing for a parent to teach, and at the same time the hardest thing for a child to learn.

After sitting down and discussing strengths and weaknesses, agree on an amount of time spent each day on focused, dedicated practice, and hold them to the time agreed on. Letting your child shave a few minutes off here and there may seem harmless but in the long run it undermines accountability.

Students should absolutely have time to mess around, practice what they want to, experiment, or just cut loose. This is a good thing, it nurtures creativity. Give them plenty of time to do this, apart from dedicated practice time.

Of course, also give positive feedback whenever you can.
